Flared Dress

Introductie
De flare dress is een zalig jurkje met aangesloten fit en uitlopende rok. De achterhals heeft een subtiele ‘keyhole’ opening met knoopje. Je kunt er ook voor kiezen om een kleine driehoek uitsnijding te maken te maken aan de voorkant. Dit model is geschikt voor een print. Om de taille te accentueren maak je er een smal ceintuurtje bij. Dit jurkje is in ieder seizoen geweldig en heeft daarom zowel korte en 3/4 als lange mouwen. Voor een jurk voor het najaar kies je een french terry (een lichte sweat kwaliteit), voor een wat luchtiger jurkje kies je een single jersey tricot in katoen of viscose.

Introduction
The flare dress is a delightful dress with a fitted bodice and a flared skirt. The back neck has a "keyhole" opening with a button closure. You can also choose to make a triangular cut out at the front.This style is suitable for a print. To emphasize the waist you can make a cute narrow belt. Perfect for every season choose from short, 3/4 or long length sleeves. For an airy summer dress choose a single jersey knit in cotton of viscose. In Autumn, try a french terry (a light sweat fabric).

De voorbereiding
Getting prepared

Bij aankoop van een van onze patronen ontvangt u 3 PDF-bestanden: een voor thuisprinters om op A4-papier af te drukken, een tweede voor A0-gebruikers om af te drukken in een printshop en een derde is voor mensen die een overheadprojector gebruiken. De volgende algemene introductietekst geeft een overzicht van hoe onze patroon-pdf's zijn opgezet en legt uit hoe je de A4-versie kunt afdrukken en hoe je de pagina's aan elkaar kunt plakken. A0-gebruikers kunnen bij hun printshop aangeven welke pagina's ze nodig hebben. Op de projector bestanden staan alle panden in dezelfde richting.
On purchasing any of our patterns you will receive 3 PDF files: one for home printers to print on A4 paper, a second at A0 is for printshop users and a third is for sewers who use an overhead projector. The following general introduction text provides an overview of how our pattern pdfs are set up and explains how to print out the A4 version and how to stick the pages together. A0 users should simply instruct their printshop which pages they require. Projector users will note that all pieces have the grain direction facing the same way.

1a.

All of our patterns follow the same set up as explained here. Each pattern starts with a cover page, an introduction, a body size chart, a design drawing, a pattern checklist and a colouring sheet.The pattern can be found on the last listing under the bookmarks tab.

1d.
Als je thuis print op een A4-printer, drukt u op het afdrukpictogram in het bovenste menu van de PDF. Uw afdrukdialoogvenster kan hiervan verschillen (rechts in het midden weergegeven), maar ik heb een paar knoppen gemarkeerd om het te verduidelijken. Om inkt te besparen kun je instellen dat het patroon in grijstinten wordt afgedrukt. Selecteer de pagina's die je wilt afdrukken, over het algemeen vanaf pagina 7 tot de laatste pagina. Zorg ervoor dat de schaal is ingesteld op 'ware grootte' of '100%' - NOOIT op 'passend op pagina'. Het werkelijke paginaformaat van de PDF is kleiner dan A4. Stel de oriëntatie in op Auto, ik vind dat dit het beste werkt omdat het dan de pdf op een A4-blad centreert.
If printing at home on an A4 printer press the print icon in the top menu of the PDF. Your print dialogue box may vary to this one (shown middle right), but I have highlighted a few buttons to take note of. To save ink you can set to print the pattern in greyscale. Select the pages to print which will usually be from page 7 until the final page. Make sure the scale is set to 'actual size' or ‘100%' - NEVER to 'fit to page’. The actual page size of the PDF is smaller than A4. Set the orientation to Auto, I find this works best as it will then centre the pdf on an A4 sheet.

1e.
Rond elke pagina zie je kleine zwarte driehoekjes met letters erin. Met een schaar en doorzichtig plakband bij de hand, kun je vervolgens om elke pagina uitknippen tot aan de driehoeken en vervolgens de letters in de zwarte driehoeken uitlijnen met de overeenkomende op de volgende pagina (A naar A, B naar B, enz.). Vervolgens kunt u het blad aan elkaar plakken. Een vel kan uit 16 of 20 pagina's bestaan, afhankelijk van het gekochte patroon. Around each page you will see small black triangles with letters inside. With scissors and clear sticky tape at hand, you can then cut out every alternate page to the triangles and then align the letters in the black triangles with the matching ones on the following page (A to A, B to B, etc). You can then proceed to stick the sheet together. One sheet can consist of 16 or 20 pages depending on the pattern purchased. Some patterns consist of one full sheet (eg. skirts with 16 pages), some of two sheets (eg. dresses with 32 pages).

Nadat je je pagina's hebt afgedrukt, leg je ze op een plat oppervlak. Knip de pagina's om en om uit tot aan de driehoekjes. Deze stippellijnen bevatten de benodigde naadtoeslag voor elk stuk. De dunnere stippellijnen geven de uiteindelijke maat aan. Voor het gemak zijn alle namen van de stukken, samen met de draadrichting en handige instructies in de afzonderlijke patroondelen geplaatst, zodat u het overtollige papier veilig kunt weggooien (recycle). Let op dat sommige patronen ook een verklarend diagram kunnen bevatten op een van de pagina's die bewaard moeten worden. Once you have printed out your pages lay them out on a flat surface (top left). Cut out to the triangle edge on alternate pages (top right). Then with clear sticky tape connect the triangles that correspond to each other (bottom left). Then cut out your pattern piece to the dashed lines (bottom right). These dashed lines include the necessary seam allowance for each piece. The thinner dotted lines indicate the finished size. For convenience all names of pieces, along with grain direction and helpful instructions have been placed inside individual pattern pieces, so you can safely throw away (please recycle) the excess paper. Note some patterns may also include an explanatory diagram on one of the pages that should also be kept.
To continue trace all the pattern pieces onto pattern paper, remembering to copy all the markings (eg. darts, piece to piece alignment lines etc).

De voorbereiding

2a.
Voor maat 34 t/m 38: Vouw de stof zo dat je twee vouw kanten krijgt. Een kant breed genoeg voor een rokdeel en een kant breed genoeg voor het voor-en achterpand.
Vanaf maat 40 passen ze niet meer naast elkaar. Je legt dan 1 rokdeel aan de vouw en plaatst de kleinere patroondelen zoals zakken en beleg delen ernaast.
For size 34 up to 38: Fold the fabric in a way that you get two folds either side. One side wide enough for a skirt part and one for the front and the back top piece.
For size 40 these pieces won't fit together. You place 1 skirt piece on fold and place the smaller pattern parts like pockets and facings next to it.

2b.
Het volgende rokdeel gaat op het volgende stuk stof met vouw. (aangezien je 1 patroondeel gebruikt voor zowel voor als achter rokdeel leg je ze 1 voor 1 in). LET OP - het achterpand rok is 5mm minder breed dan het voorpand rok.
The next skirt part wil be placed on the next piece of fabric on fold. (because you only use one pattern part for both front and back skirt you cut them out one by one.) NOTE that the back is indicated as 5mm less wide than the front.

2c.
De mouw gaat weer op een volgend stuk, deze past niet naast het rokdeel.
The sleeve will be cut out of the next piece of fabric this does not fit next to a skirt part.

2d.
Voor je de zakken knipt lees eerst dit.
Uit het voorpand moeten de zakingangen geknipt worden. Je maakt gaatjes in het patroondeel op de stippellijn. Copieer deze lijn op je rokdeel en knip de zakingangen uit. Om je patroon straks mooi te laten doorlopen plaats je de uitgeknipte stukken op de zakdelen. Deze zakdelen leg je op de sof, zodanig dat het patroon mooi doorloopt. Knip nu je zakdelen.
Before you cut the pockets read this first.
The pocket openings need to be cut out of the front of the skirt. Make some holes along the line of the dotted line on your pattern. Copy the dots on the skirt part and cut them out.
To pattern match the pockets you place these cut out pieces on your pocket pieces and place them on the fabric to match the cut out.

2e.
Om je patroon straks mooi te laten doorlopen plaats je de uitgeknipte stukken op de zakdelen. Deze zakdelen leg je op de sof, zodanig dat het patroon mooi doorloopt. Knip nu je zakdelen.
To pattern match the pockets you place these cut out pieces on your pocket pieces and place them on the fabric to match the cut out.

- A woven label (optional)
- A strip of interfacing of approx 1 cm wide
- A strip of stretch fusible interlining the measurements of the belt.
- A buckle with a 2 cm opening (optional)
- A 12 mm size button
- A small piece of vlisofix (2-sided fusible interlining, optional)

Goed om te weten
Ik ga in deze werkbeschrijving uit van het gebruik van een overlock machine. Mocht je daar niet over beschikken dan kun je een zig-zag steek gebruiken op een gewone naaimachine. Ik raad dan wel aan om er altijd een stretch stiksel naast te plaatsen. De naadtoeslag van de patronen is 1cm. Check wat de breedte instelling van je naad is op je lockmachine is. Is het 0,7cm dan kun je tijdens het stikken 3mm wegsnijden. De stretchnaden stik je met een stretchsteek instelling op de gewone naaimachine.

Good to know
For this tutorial an overlock machine was being used for sewing most of the garment. However, it is possible to use a regular sewing machine and sew with a zigzag stitch. I do recommend sewing an extra stretch stitch next to it to create clean lines. The seam allowance of the patterns is 10mm. Check the seam width setting of your overlock machine. Is it less than 7mm? Then you can cut away a little while sewing. The stretch seams can be sewn using the stretch setting on a regular sewing machine.

4.
Markering, opstrijken van vlieseline en coupenaden
Marking pieces, ironing on interfacing and darts

4a.
Kopieer alle coupenaden en pastekentjes op de achterkant van de stof. Je kunt hier carbon papier (speciaal voor dit doel) en een radeerwieltje voor gebruiken of zoals hier gaatjes prikken in het patroon waar de coupelijnen staan.
Copy all the darts and marks on the backside of the fabric. You can use carbon paper and a tracing wheel or make some holes on the lines of your pattern and copy these with a chalk pen on your pattern piece.

4b.
Vervolgens deze markeringen overnemen op je patroondeel en deze met elkaar verbinden. Je kunt ook de coupenaden uit het papieren patroon knippen en overtrekken met een krijtje of uitwasbare pen.
Now you can connect the markings.It is also possible to cut out the dart shape in the paper pattern and trace the line with a chalk pen.

4c.
Vouw het pandje in het midden van de coupe naad markering en speld de coupenaad van onder naar boven.
Fold the garment piece in half though the middle of the dart marking and pin from bottom to top.

4d.
Stik de coupenaad met een stretchsteek op een reguliere naaimachine.
Sew the dart with a stretch stitch setting on your sewing machine.

4e.
Strijk de vlieseline versteviging langs de hals voor.
Iron on the fusible interlining on the front of the neckline

4f.
Strijk de vlieseline versteviging langs de hals achter. Om de bocht te maken rond de "keyhole" knip je kleine driehoekjes uit het strookje.
Iron on the fusible interlining on the back of the neckline. To go around the curve, cut little triangles out of the strip.

4g.
Om een mooie lijn te stikken kun je de lijn van de ronding overnemen van het patroon op de vlieseline. (Zoals je ziet zag ik hier dat ik de vlieseline net iets te dicht op de kant had geplakt, dus moest daar nog een klein strookje bijplakken! Oeps! ;-))
To make sewing this shape a bit easier you can copy the shape of the keyhole from the pattern on to the interlining. (As you may have noticed I stuck the interling a little too close to the edge so I had to add a small strip later. Oops! ;-))

4h.
Strijk derekbare vlieseline versteviging op de strook stof voor de riem.
Iron on the fusible interlining on the strip of fabric cut for the belt.

5.
Lusjes en halslijn
Loops and neckline

5a.
Het strookje stof van ongeveer 15cm breed en 2cm hoog.
Take a strip of fabric approx. 15cm wide and 2cm high.

5b.
Vouw de bies in de breedte doormidden.
Stik 2à 3 mm van de rand met een gewone steek. Laat het stikdraadje eraan.Knip de randen kort af.
Fold the strip of fabric width wise. Sew 2-3mm from the edge with a regular stitch. Leave the stitching yarn. Cut away the edges

5c.
Doe het garen door de oog van een dikke stompe naald.
Thread the yarn through the eye of the needle of a needle with a rounded point.

5d.
Haal de naald door het strookje stof om het lusje te keren en trek zachtjes aan het draadje.
Insert the threaded needle back into the loop to gently pull it inside out.

5e.
Je hebt nu genoeg voor een lusje achter en 2 riemlussen.
You now have a piece big enough for a back neck loop and 2 beltloops.

5f.
Knip een stukje van ongeveer 3,5 cm, vouw doormidden en speld in het midden van de middenachter hals boven de "keyhole".
Cut a piece of aprox 3,5 cm, fold in half and pin in the middle of the top back neck above the "keyhole".

5g.
Naai het lusje vast.
Sew on the loop.

5h.
Eventueel een label naaien op de voering kant van het achterpasje.
Sew a label on the lining of the back yoke (optional).

5i.
Sluit de schoudernaden van de belegdelen en voor-achterpand.
Close the shoulderseams of the facing parts and front-backparts.

5j.
Speld het voor-achterpand met de goede kanten tegen de goede kanten van het beleg.
Pin the front-backparts with the right sides to the right sides of the facing.

5k.
Stik langs de hals op de verstevigde kant. De "keyhole geef je wat knipjes en de hoekjes knip je af.
Sew along the edge of the side with the interlining on it. snip the "keyhole and cut of the corners.

5l.
Keer het beleg en stik door op ong. 6mm.
Turn the facing and topstitch on 6mm.

5m.
Om ervoor te zorgen dat het beleg niet steeds omkrult is het een goed idee deze vast te zetten met een stukje vliesofix. Eerst een stukje opstrijken op de papierkant, dan het papiertje eraf pellen en persen op de beleg kant.
To make sure the facing doesn't curl up it is a good idea to attach the facing with a piece of vliesofix.
First iron on a piece on the paper side, than peel off the paper and press on the facing side.

5n.
Naai het knoopje aan.
Sew on the button.

5o.
Een splitje voor:
Neem het voor hals detail van het patroon over op de achterkant van de stof met een krijtje. Strijk hierover strookjes vlieseline zodat de stof niet uitrekt. Eventueel nogmaals de lijnen op de vlieseline tekenen zodat je hier makkelijk overheen kan stikken.
A front detail:
Copy the front neckline detail from the pattern on the inside of the fabric with a chalk pen. Iron on some strips of interfacing to prevent stretching. If you like, draw the lines on these strips to use as a sewing guide.

5p.
Stik het beleg tegen de hals (goede kanten op elkaar) en stik in éée keer de lijnen van het splitje mee. Knip de hoekjes weg en knip de v in.
Sew the facing to the neckline (right sides together) going over the v-shape on the front in one go. Cut away the corners, trim the seam in the V.

5q.
Keer het beleg, pers en stik door.
Turn, press and topstitch.

5r.
Hiervoor pas je eerst de vorm van het "keyhole" splitje achter aan volgens afbeelding.
First adapt the shape of the keyhole in the back, according to the image.

5s.
Knip een strookje stof van ongeveer 4cm hoog (deze wordt later bijgeknipt) en de breedte van de gehele halswijdte. Stik de schoudernaden dicht. Werk het keyhole splitje af met de overlockmachine. Speld de bies met de goede kanten tegen de hals en stik op een 0,5cm van de kant tegen de hals.
Cut a strip of fabric of approx. 4cm high and the full width of the neckline wide. Close the shoulderseams. Finish the keyhole opening with an overlockstitch. Pin the band right sides together to the neck and sew on 0,5cm from the edge to the neck.

5t.
Strijk het strookje plat, de naad wijst omhoog.
Iron the band flat, with the seam pointing upwards.

5u.
Vouw de strook over de naad, strijk plat en speld vast.
Fold the band over the seam, iron flat and pin.

5v.
Stik de bies zo dicht mogelijk langs de naad door.
Topstitch the band as close as possible to the seam.

5w.
Knip direct naast het stiksel de overtollige stof weg.
Cut away the access fabric as close as possible to the stitchline.

5x.
Vouw het lockrandje van het "keyhole" detail om, strijk plat, speld en stik vast.
Fold over the overlocked edge of the keyhole detail, iron flat, pin and sew.

5y.
Vouw de halsbies om, speld (of clip) vast. Aan de rechterkant kun je hier een lusje tussen vouwen.
Fold over the neckband, pin (or clip).
On the right side you can fold in a small loop.

5z-1.
Tenslotte stik je de bies vast op de rand.
Finally sew the band close to the edge.

5z-2.
Het resultaat aan de binnenkant.

6.
Zakken en mouwen
Pockets and sleeves

6a.
Speld en stik met een stretch steek het voering zakdeel tegen de zakopening met de goede kanten tegen elkaar.
Pin and stitch with a stretch stitch the pocket lining part against the pocket opening part with the right sides together.

6b.
Strijk de naad open.
Press open the seam.

6c.
Keer het zakbelegdeel en stik door op 0,6 cm van de kant met een normale machine steek.
Turn the pocket lining part and topstitch on 0,6 cm from the edge with a regular machine stitch.

6d.
Speld het zakdeel tegen het zak belegdeel met de goede kanten op elkaar.
Pin the pocketpart against the pocket liningpart, right sides together.

6e.
Stik het zakdeel tegen het zak belegdeel met de overlock machine
Sew the pocketpart against the pocket liningpart with the overlocker.

6f.
Speld en stik met een overlock steek de mouw in het armsgat. Gebruik hiervoor de kniptekens.
(geen foto) Gebruik een mouwplank om de mouwnaad te persen. Pers de naad richting de mouw. Een vochtige doek zorgt ervoor dat je de naden niet door perst.
Pin and sew with an overlock stitch the sleeve into the sleeve opening. Use the markings on your pattern. Use a sleeve board to press the sleeve. Press the seam towards the sleeve. A moist cloth prevents the seam from pressing through.

7.
Zijnaden, zoom en ceintuur
Sideseams, hem and belt

7a.
Speld en stik het voorpand tegen het rok voorpand en het achterpand tegen het rok achterpand. Vouw hierbij de naad van het voorpand naar boven en de naad van het achterpand naar beneden.
Pin and sew the front piece to the front skirt piece and the back piece to the back skirt piece. Fold the seam of the front up and the seam of the back down.

7b.
Speld een riemlus (groot genoeg voor een riem van 2cm breed) in de zijnaad ter hoogte van de taille.
Pin a beltloop (big enough for a 2cm wide belt) in the side seam at waist hight.

7c.
Je kunt nu de zijnaad spelden en stikken met de overlock machine, in één lijn van mouw tot onderkant. Vouw hierbij de mouwnaad naar boven bij het voorpand en naar beneden bij het achterpand. Zo krijg je geen dikke naden op elkaar.
Now you can pin and sew the sideseams with the overlock machine in one line from sleeve to hem. Fold while sewing the armhole seam up for the front and down for the back.

7d.
Speld en strijk de zoom, En stik deze aan de buitenkant van de jurk met een coverlock machine of een tweeling naald in een gewone naaimachine.Doe dit ook met de mouwzomen.
Press and pin the hem and use a coverlock machine or a twin needle on the regular sewing machine to sew a stretch hem on the right side of the dress. Do this also with the sleeve hems.

Korte mouw met manchett
a. Als je de mouw met manchet gaat maken: speld en stik de naden van de manchetten dicht Keer de manchet om tot je in het midden een vouw hebt.
b. Keer de mouw binnestebuiten en speld de manchet in de mouwopening. Naai de manchet vast met een overlock steek.
c. Keer de mouw weer terug om.
Als je voor een korte mouw zonder manchett kiest - vergeet niet een extra 15mm zoom aan te tekenen.

Short sleeve with cuff
a. If you make the version with the sleeves with cuffs: pin and sew the seams of the cuffs.Turn the cuff until you get a fold halfway.
b. Fold the sleeve inside out and pin the cuff into the sleeve opening.
c. Sew the cuff in the sleeve opening with an overlock stitch. Turn the sleeve.
If you choose to make a short sleeve without ciff, dont forget to add 15mm extra to the seam allowance.

7e.
